SMART SOLUTIONS. PERSONAL ATTENTION.
On 12 March 2010 Vanessa Mathews was interviewed by Neil Mitchell, on Radio 3AW, about the division of assets upon the breakdown of a de facto relationship.

On 12 March 2010 Vanessa Mathews, accredited family law specialist and accredited family dispute resolution provider, was interviewed by 3AW radio host Neil Mitchell about 'Divorce law in Australia', in particular the division of assets upon the breakdown of a de facto relationship. The issue was of particular interest in the context of the breakdown of the de facto relationship between Michael Clarke and Lara Bingle, which had been given extensive coverage by the media that week.
Vanessa discussed the recent (1 March 2009) changes to the Family Law Act and the similarities that now exist between de facto relationships and marriages and how a property settlement is achieved. Vanessa gave examples of how the Family Court will consider the financial and non-financial contributions made by the parties to a de facto relationship, for examples, assets owned prior to the commencement of the de facto relationship, any inheritance received during the de facto relationship, differences in income, the standard of living enjoyed during the de facto relationship, and the arrangements for the care of the children of the de facto relationship.
The treatment of gifts given by one party to the other during the de facto relationship, for example, a luxury car, were discussed, as was the question of what happens to an engagement ring.
